In an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation Picard is captured
and tortured by the Cardassians. Having four blinding lights in his
eyes, a Cardassian wants to hear that there are five as a sign of
Picard's surrender. 'There are four lights', then, is a yell of
defiance and strength, symbolising the human tendency towards
moral behaviour. See also
